January 11, 2011 One never knows!
Today started out like any other day. I even commented to one of my friends this morning that the day was kind of blah, same thing different day, type of thing. Then Martha awakened. I was a little nervous about her actions. I had that uncomfortable feeling deep inside of me. I kept going to her room because I kept hearing her and I would swear that she was awake and I look and she was sound asleep. Finally, I got tired of going in to check on her so I went in and talked to her and kept rubbing her feet. I couldn't understand a thing she said and her voice was so weak I could barely hear her. I was really preparing for something not so good. It took awhile to get her out of bed and get her dressed for her short day. I was trying to guide her down the hallway and she kept going back to her room and mumbling stuff. Finally, we made it to the living room and all of a sudden she turned on a dime and ran down the hall. When she got to her room she acted horrified, threw her hands over her face and just cried and sobbed, this time with some tears. I could do nothing but hold her and tell her Jesus was taking care of everything and that He loved her. Well, after awhile we calmed down and I got her to come to the table, you know eat you'll feel better, she was very distant and just unaffected by anything. I had to all but stand on my head to try and and get her to eat even a bit. I was praying that God would show me what to give her that she would eat or drink and at least strengthen her voice. About that time there was a knock at the door and it was the Hospice nurse, Audrey. Well, she was the answer to my prayer. Just her presence seemed to perk Mom up. She ate some more and then Audrey suggested some chocolate. Now, Mom has wanted nothing to do with cookies, cake or candy. This morning when Montie came to visit he had brought me two small bags of peanut M & M's. We ate one bag so I opened the other for Mom on the slim chance she may eat them. Well, after the first one (which was a blue one and it gave her a very blue mouth and teeth) she seemed to be hooked. Then she had a nonpariel. After that she grabbed my Scooby Doo cup and drank my tea. I guess the sugar gave her a high or something but, she started acting so funny. She would do or say something and we'd laugh and then Mom would throw her head back and show her chocolate toothless smile. She would laugh and put her head on the table and just giggle. Joyce was so entertained and happy to see her acting so lively. At one point Mom took my face and put her nose up to mine and just wiggled her nose back and forth on mine. What a great way to end an unpredictable day. Right now she is sitting in the living room with her favorite amusement, the coasters and a baby. That baby is getting alot of love and a lot of stories (hope she understands what Mom is telling her). Patty, I hate to tell you this, but Mom seems to have lost some more weight. We weighed her on my scales and she is around 90 lbs. If anyone has any ideas on what I could try and get her to eat (and preferably finger food) I would really appreciate it. Audrey and I were trying to think of what we could give her. Tomorrow I'm gonna try some carrots and green beans, she loves vegetables, at least she used to. I should be going to the grocery store on Thursday (weather permitting) so any ideas, thank you for. That seems to be it for today. A day that I dreaded has turned out to be a fun day. One never knows, does one?

How about things with protein and fat, to fatten her up. Finger foods that toddler love....like cut up chicken nuggets or hot dogs, or pieces of any meat cut up. Pieces of cheese - string cheese! Of course cut up fruit - she loves her melon! Not fatty, but full of vitamins and fiber. Carrot sticks seem like a good idea. She seemed to like that chocolate Ensure the other day, and I know she loves ice cream....what if you made a milkshake with ice cream and Ensure?
talk about your roller coaster ride! fattening huh? i agree chicken nuggets are good for that. what about full fat milk? great idea about a milk shake stace. what about pizza bites. she loves pizza and they are SUPER fattening! aldi has some good ones...
Bonnie, it sounds like your days are never boring! I know it isn't always easy but you are doing a great job. The last few months of my mom's life, we spent almost everyday together. My family & I thought we were very blessed to have a family 'reunion' everyday with our mom. Those are memories I wouldn't trade for anything. I know you feel the same way.
As for food, my mom loved those mini muffins and would eat at least two a day. When Joe's mom came to live with us, she only weighed 80 lbs and we had to fatten her up too. It was hard to find things she would eat but we tried the muffins and she would eat them with her ensure or boost chocalate drinks. Maybe not so nutritious but they are kind of fattening.
I hope to get out to see you again soon.
